Day 6 - June 16th

June 16th - Bloomsday Festival
Hannah was really excited about what we were doing today. It was Bloomsday, and everyone got to dress up in Edwardian Style costumes to celebrate. Bloomsday is held to celebrate one of Ireland’s most famous authors, James Joyce, and his most famous book, Ulysses. The book follows Leopold Bloom in his one-day journey around some pubs in Ireland. Some famous men try to recreate his journey every year, but we wouldn’t be doing that. We were going to a performance of the book in downtown Dublin. We all dressed in our newly purchased costumes. The girls wore long sleeved ruffled blouses, floor length raspberry colored skirts, and carried lace parasols. Joseph wore a black suit, a bowler hat, and wire-rimmed circle shaped glasses.

These are what we wore:

Bloomsday Festival - Holiday
As we walked down the streets of Dublin, we saw many people dressed similar to us. There were some amazing costumes! Hanna tried to fake an Irish accent to fit in more, but it failed. She didn’t notice how bad it was, and kept on talking that way for the rest of the day. As we neared the James Joyce Center, which was where the performance was being held, it became more and more crowded. Bloomsday really is quite the draw!

A scene from the show
We finally made it to the center. We found our seats in the packed room, and got ready for the show. The anticipation built and built as the time grew nearer. Emily was bouncing out of her seat! They finally began with the show.

When the performance finished, we were all raving about how wonderful it was. The actors were fantastic, the sets were so realistic, and we may have even learnt a little history. As we walked back through the crowded streets, we decided we should probably eat lunch. After much looking up and arguing, we finally decided on The Woolen Mills Eating House. Fortunately, it wasn’t far from where we were at the                                                                  time.

The Wooden Mills Eating House - Local Food
We were greeted by a metal and glass exterior. When we walked in, it was really surprising. We were expected a run down place with a couple tables and chairs, but we were completely wrong. The whole place was lit by natural light coming in from the many windows. The light colored floors and walls gave the place an open feeling. The tables and chairs were mostly glass and metal that gave a modern vibe. Delicious smells wafted through the air, coming from the authentic Irish cuisine and the beautiful pastries and various desserts. When our polite server gave us a table and menus, we could hardly decide what to eat! All the native dishes looked delicious. We all ended up getting the Smoked Haddock brandade croquettes, golden beet salad, preserved lemon and pink prawn mayo as an appetizer to share. For our meals, I ordered Ray wing with chunky beetroot and baked potato wedges, Hanna got the Hay-smoked ham with Coolattin mature Cheddar sandwich, Leah wanted the Organic black quinoa salad with Lilliput Buffalo Feta, beetroot,

After eating our delicious meals, we all wanted dessert. We ended up getting a bunch of dessert, which consisted of a mango-passionfruit cheesecake, a flourless chocolate brownie, lemon panna cotta with almond crumble and banana tuille, and finally a “plate of nice treats.”  After devouring the sweets, we packed up what was left of our meals, paid, and left.

It was almost four o’clock by the time we finished, so we wandered the streets for about two hours. We window-shopped, took pictures, and bought a few souvenirs. Leah and Joseph both got leprechaun figurines, while Hanna, Emily and I bought T-shirts. After finally wandering back to the hostel, we ate what was left of our meals for dinner, and promptly fell asleep. It had been a long day full of fun, and we couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow brought!
